Note: We plan to collect the names of those from McCune who served in the armed forces throughout the history of the community and post them in the future.

McCune and World War II
Publicity, movies, and documentaries about World War II led us to consider what happened in our small town of McCune, KS, during those years. How were the families there affected? How many men and women served? How many lost their lives?

Unlike many schools, McCune printed at least three yearbooks during those years: in 1943, in 1945, and in 1946. According to those yearbooks, 141 McCune alumni served in W.W.II along with three staff members. (Since this article appeared in the June newsletter, we have added seven people bringing the total to 148 alumni who served.)

Also listed was a McCune and Community Honor Roll in the 1946 edition. With additions, at least 155 young people were called to the Armed Forces for a total of 306 from the McCune Vicinity. Let us know if there is anyone else unlisted. Some corrections were made in spelling and some married names have been added since this article was printed in June 2001.

Most names have been reproduced here as they appeared in those issues of the McCune Eagle.
